A Comparison of Different Techniques for Passive Measurement of Vegetation Photosynthetic Activity: Solar-Induced Fluorescence, Red-Edge Reflectance Structure and Photochemical Reflectance Indices

چکیده
Measurement of vegetation photosynthetic activity from space has been an objective for the development of new techniques. Among the different existing techniques, passive fluorescence measurements, specific reflectance indices such as the PRI (Photochemical Reflectance Index), and derivative of high spectral resolution reflectance in the red-edge (680-750 nm) are the three methods than can be used as remote sensing techniques from airborne and space sensors and that have proven to give consistent and reliable information about canopy photosynthetic activity.

Parallel Seasonal Patterns of Photosynthesis, Fluorescence, and Reflectance Indices in Boreal Trees
Tree species in the boreal forest cycle between periods of active growth and dormancy alter their photosynthetic processes in response to changing environmental conditions. For deciduous species, these changes are readily visible, while evergreen species have subtler foliar changes during seasonal transitions. In this study, we used remotely sensed optical indices to observe seasonal changes in...
متن کاملSurface reflectance properties of Antarctic moss and their relationship to plant species, pigment composition and photosynthetic function
In this study the variations in surface reflectance properties and pigment concentrations of Antarctic moss over species, sites, microtopography and with water content were investigated. It was found that species had significantly different surface reflectance properties, particularly in the region of the red edge (approximately 700 nm), but this did not correlate strongly with pigment concentr...
متن کاملRethinking Chlorophyll Responses to Stress: Fluorescence and Reflectance Remote Sensing in a Coastal Environment
Chlorophyll fluorescence and hyperspectral reflectance were used to evaluate physiological responses to two common stressors in coastal environments. Chlorophyll content is one indicator of drought and salinity vegetation stress because of its direct role in the photosynthetic process and electron transport. Recent advances in fluorescence spectroscopy have led to the development of numerous re...
متن کاملVegetation assessment in East Africa using MGVI and Red Edge Position from ENVISAT MERIS data
The actual condition of vegetation cover is represented by its spectral signature. Photosynthetic active vegetation is characterized by a low reflectance in the red and a high reflectance in the near infrared spectra. This specific feature is used to calculate different vegetation indices. One index is the MERIS Global Vegetation Index (MGVI), the other one is the Red Edge Position (REP), which...
متن کاملAssessment of Canopy Chlorophyll Content Retrieval in Maize and Soybean: Implications of Hysteresis on the Development of Generic Algorithms
Canopy chlorophyll content (Chl) closely relates to plant photosynthetic capacity, nitrogen status and productivity. The goal of this study is to develop remote sensing techniques for accurate estimation of canopy Chl during the entire growing season without re-parameterization of algorithms for two contrasting crop species, maize and soybean. These two crops represent different biochemical mec...
